So You Want to Be a Nurse Informatician? Part III - Communities

I thought for the third and final post of this series that I would focus on communities & organizations that you might like to know about when starting your journey. Some of these require paid memberships, but if you aren't in a spot to shell out funds right now, you may still benefit from checking out their websites and following their socials. I am a HUGE fan of LinkedIn for this, and would love to connect with you're on there too!

The CAN Health Network is a national partnership comprised of leading Canadian health organizations, referred to as Edges, and companies across Canada. The Network works together to introduce new solutions into the health care system, and pave the way for Canadian businesses to scale not only across Canada, but globally.
At Canada Health Infoway (Infoway) we believe a more connected and collaborative system is a healthier system, and we work with governments, health care organizations, clinicians and patients to make health care more digital. We’re working to ensure that everyone is able to access their personal health information, book appointments, get prescriptions, view lab test results and access other health services, online. We’re working with our partners to transform the health system because we know that digital in health can be as transformative as digital has been in other aspects of our lives. We’re an independent, not-for-profit organization funded by the federal government.
The overall goals of Canadian Nursing Informatics Association (CNIA) include the following:
To strategically seek out partnerships and networking opportunities to provide leadership and expertise for Nursing Informatics in Canada
To foster innovation by expanding and disseminating knowledge about nursing and health informatics for nurses and the healthcare community
To engage in national and international nursing and health informatics initiatives
To create awareness about the value of standardized data in health care to facilitate knowledge driven care and health system use
The Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) provides comparable and actionable data and information that are used to accelerate improvements in health care, health system performance and population health across Canada. Our stakeholders use our broad range of health system databases, measurements and standards, together with our evidence-based reports and analyses, in their decision-making processes. We protect the privacy of Canadians by ensuring the confidentiality and integrity of the health care information we provide.
Digital Health Canada is a member-supported not-for-profit professional association that connects, inspires, and empowers the digital health professionals creating the future of health in Canada. Our members are a diverse community of accomplished, influential professionals working to make a difference in advancing healthcare through information, technology, and data management. Digital Health Canada fosters network growth and connection; brings together ideas from multiple segments for incubation and advocacy; supports members through professional development at the individual and organizational level; and advocates for the Canadian digital health industry. Digital Health Canada membership is ideal for anyone with an interest in health informatics, health information management, digital health, m-health, e-health, or related healthcare issues and practices.
The Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) is a global advisor, thought leader and member association committed to transforming the health ecosystem. As a mission-driven non-profit, HIMSS offers a unique depth and breadth of expertise in health innovation, public policy, workforce development, research and analytics to advise leaders, stakeholders and influencers from across the ecosystem on best practices. With a community-centric approach, our innovation engine delivers key insights, education and engaging events to healthcare providers, payers, governments, startups, life sciences and other health services organizations, ensuring they have the right information at the point of decision.
The National Institutes of Health Informatics (NIHI) is Canada's first national organization dedicated to fostering Health Informatics (HI) innovation, research and education. NIHI is a virtual, self-sustaining institute of institutes. One of its goals is to be a catalyst in the development of HI initiatives in academia and industry. NIHI seeks to serve as a coordinator and facilitator in the development of initiatives dedicated to HI research and education. NIHI operates under the Community of Practice concept. It was established as a federal not-for-profit corporation in Canada. in 2008. NIHI was launched with the participation of researchers and teachers from most Canadian universities and colleges with existing or incipient HI education or research programs. NIHI colleagues come from all parts of the Canadian healthcare sector including academia, health care, government and industry.
